In 1963, University of California, Los Angeles Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics Director Orson Anderson asked UCSD Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics founder Walter Munk for some background on staffing of the UCSD IGPP. Munk searched his files and IGPP files for early records documenting the establishment of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics at La Jolla. In this manner, he compiled a file of early documents which he then photocopied for distribution to Anderson and others interesed in the early history of IGPP. This accession consists of photocopies of early documents concerning the establishment of the Institute of Physics and Planetary Physics on the campus of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at La Jolla. The file includes drafts of proposals written by Walter Munk for the establishment of a branch IGPP on the La Jolla campus. It includes photocopies of correspondence exchanged by Munk with Charles F. Coates, Louis B. Slichter, Roger Revelle, UCSD Chancellor Herbert York, University of California Vice President Harry Wellman, University of California President Clark Kerr and others. The file includes correspondence and proposals submitted to the Max C. Fleischmann Foundation requesting funds to build an IGPP building at La Jolla. The file includes other papers and photographs documenting the design, site and construction of the IGPP building.
